Sleep
If there is one thing you should do more of, it should be sleep. And best of all it is FREE!
Why sleeping is so important?
I read a book this year called “Why We Sleep” and it made me make sleep my highest daily priority.
Simply put my biggest learning from this book was sleep is where recover both our BODY and our MIND!
Now you might be asking is it really that simple. Yes, it is. In the book it goes into a lot more details with real world examples and real-world studies.
The last past of your daily sleep is where it recovers or resets all your cognitive functions. This also includes your mood.
It is always good to have a real-world example. I know for sure that when I do not get enough sleep, the smallest thing can make me cranky or angry. I can almost guarantee on a day when I have had a good night’s sleep, I would not get cranky or angry at the same thing!
Another thing I have noticed is that parents (Yes, I have two amazing kids) very often will tell their kids to do something but as parents we do not follow our own advice.
When it comes to sleep this is classic example. We often tell our kids that they need to relax, wind down before they go to bed. This could mean watching TV, then brush their teeth, then read a book and then go to bed, where in their room the lights are off!
Whilst us adults would watch some TV, probably something that stimulates us and in turn stimulates our brains. Then we brush our teeth, go to bed, have the night light on and spend a great deal of time on our phones (Yes, I am guilty of this too, although not so often anymore).
Then we wonder why it takes us so long to fall asleep. And we don’t have a good restful sleep!
I encourage you to try for at least two to three nights in a row to follow your kid’s bedtime routine, see if your sleep is better.
As the saying goes “Rest is Best” or it could be “Sleep is Best”
